Traveling the Andaman Sea - Island Hopping from Phuket to Ko Lipe

1. From Phuket to Ko Yao Noi

It sure is exciting when leaving your home and exploring something entirely new as this beautiful country Thailand, about 11 hours plane ride away. But I need to say that I went well prepared and organized, as I gained experience in backpacking a year ago by traveling Bali, Lombok and the Gili Islands in Indonesia - but thats another story.

Having bought an extremely expensive but very comfortable new backpack and a copy of the Stefan Lose Southern Thailand travel guide the journey could begin. Having landed in Phuket early in the evening, temperatures were still above 28°C, a mild sea breeze in the air and the sweat of our taxi driver quite presistant I travelled to Nyang Beach, 2 Kilometers away from the airport to stay at the beautiful Nyang Garden Cottage in a simple Bungalow with Fan. Having read about the weekly night market of Nyang Beach every Thursday, I got changed into something suiting the outside temperature and went to my first cultural event of my holiday in Thailand. Unfortunately the night market was about to close down and many stands were packing their stuff together already. So I bought a little bunch of tiny Bananas, which were so tasty, I ate 3 at once. Back at the Bungalow I sat down at the beautiful Restaurant and had my first Thai meal, a Green Curry with Chicken and Vegetables and sticky rice, which I can only recommend, because throughout the trip, I would remind myself of it a couple of times thinking how good it was.

The first day I slept very long due to the jetlack and decided to have a lazy day at the beach. The Nyang Beach really is something! Not too many tourists, lovely sea food and a huge beach with warm and smooth water...let me tell you there is not many places like this left on Phuket.

Stefan Lose didn't help me much with my decision where to go next and how to get there, but a lovely travel agent at the beach did. So the next day I would take a taxi for 500 Baht (Way over priced) to the port, where the longtail boats leave for Ko Yao Yai und Ko Yao Noi, two very big and beautiful Islands in the Andaman Sea.

Ko Yao Noi was less travelled by tourists as expected. Walk-in prices for accommodation were quite low during this time in April and so I stayed at the Coconut Corner at the Pasai Beach for 400 Baht. After the check-in I organized a Motorcicle for the day to explore the rest of the Island. By doing so I passed the very romantic Phang Nga bay and the Tha Khao Bungalows - a place which seemed to me like a little community with a beautiful beach and lots of happy people. I immediately asked if they had any Bungalows available and had a look at some. After exploring the rest of the island, getting my first sunburn and after just one night at the Coconut Corner I moved to Tha Khao to stay there. My expectations weren't dissapointed, lovely dinners with fellow travellers, good chill-out times and swimming in the sea, which was so warm, I nearly felt cold when I got out of the water. You really could leave stress behind at this place...

Still I decided after 2 nights to continue my journey and made a plan for my entire holidays, which Islands to stay on and to visit. Next would be Ko Lanta...
